NAASF - Steamboat 2023

This space used to read, "Telluride"... but we ended up with a hole in the 2023 schedule for February that we weren't sure NAASF was going to be able to fill until the last minute! While this meant that the lodging inventory usually set aside for us was already sold out, we managed to put together a great week of skiing, parties, and one whole day of staying in the lodge watching the 80 mph winds rip around the mountain!!

On Monday, NAASF Coordinator Jim Tullos invited everyone to ski in a pink or red onesie in the practice courses and all over the mountain. As you can see, a bunch of people took him up on it!

Our club dinner was at the 8th Street Steakhouse in Steamboat Springs, upstairs in their loft dining area. They have a very cool space there in a rustic Mountain West style that helped set us up for a fun evening of cooking our own steaks on their grill. That's not a typo! It was certainly a unique experience, but the food was fantastic and the staff treated us very well. This is definitely another place we will be coming back to in the future! We also got to meet a handful of new members:

  • Greg Laemmrich
  • Renee Puvvada Ward and Donald Ward (Renee brought FIVE people to her very first ski week!!)
  • Paige Ward
  • Kim Ramsey
  • Irwin and Alison Shapiro

Wednesday night's theme party was, "You gotta have heart!" in honor of Valentine's Day. As expected, red and pink costumes filled the hallways and ballroom of the Steamboat Grand, with tons of hearts everywhere. Somewhat less expected was the UPS team's group costume of Grinches and Cindy Lou Who's making a grand entrance together. At least they were all wearing hearts - even if they were "two sizes too small" - and the quality of the group costume was really impressive!

The snow conditions could not have been better for the week, in spite of the terrible weather we had on Wednesday that forced the closure of the mountain and postponement of all the races that day. NAASF Technical Director Suzy Danielson worked with the Steamboat race crew to make sure we wouldn't lose out, though - we ended up running all of the alpine races on Thursday, one after the other! It made for a long day, but that was somewhat offset by one of the most fun A Giant Slalom course sets we've ever seen on All Out to start the day, and then everyone moved over to the Bashor Race Arena for the B Giant Slalom and both A and B Slalom races. This week, American edged us out of the lead for the NAASF Cup, putting everything on the line for our last meet of the year in Palisades!
